Koreen has been involved in Schipperkes since 1976, and has participated in several doggie activities, including Junior Showmanship (Exhibitor, Instructor, Judge, and Coordinator), Conformation (Exhibitor, Instructor, All-Breed Canadian Kennel Club Breeders’ Sweepstakes, American Schipperke Match, All-Breed Match Judge, and All-Breed Puppy Sweepstakes Judge at the Lower Mainland Dog Fanciers of British Columbia Shows), Obedience (Exhibitor and Instructor), Agility, Weight Pull, and Schutzhund.
Koreen first started co-breeding Schipperkes in 1981 until 1992 under the “Foxkin” prefix. Koreen then co-bred from 1993 until 1995 under the “Jonabell” prefix, and finally “Helbender” was registered in August of 1995.
Why “Helbender” for a Kennel Name? Koreen’s very first Schipperke, Hustler, was out of Can. Am. Bda. BIS BISS Ch. Fairlaur Diablo (pictured below), bred by Fran and Laurence Hoye of Fairlaur Perm. CKC Reg’d., and owned by Charles and Carol Graham. In his time, “Diablo” was the all-time winning Schipperke in Canada, and let’s just say that little ten-year-old Koreen was in complete awe of this dog. Choosing “Helbender” is a small personal tribute to a dog that will forever remain prominent in Koreen’s mind.
