In Canada, tattooing is one form of identification that must be done prior to a registered (purebred) dog leaving for it’s new home.  It is usually done in either ear, or either flank.  It will consist of a three-digit combination that is unique to a particular breeder, followed by a number, and ends with a letter, indicating what year the puppy was born.
