In Canada, tattooing is one form of identification that must be done prior to a registered (purebred) dog leaving for it’s new home.  It is usually done in either ear, or either flank.  It will consist of a three-digit combination that is unique to a particular breeder, followed by a number, and ends with a letter, indicating what year the puppy was born.

A – 1992	B – 1993	C – 1994	E – 1995	F – 1996
G – 1997	H – 1998	J – 1999	K – 2000	L – 2001
M – 2002	N – 2003	P – 2004	R – 2005	S – 2006
